Georgia Travel Guide: Tbilisi, Kazbegi Mountains and Wine Region Essentials
Georgia is one of Europe's most rewarding hidden gems. Explore ancient cave cities, dramatic Caucasus peaks, and the world's oldest wine culture.
Why Georgia Should Be Your Next Travel Destination
Nestled at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Georgia is one of the world's most rewarding and underrated travel destinations. This small Caucasus nation packs an extraordinary range of experiences into a compact geography: ancient cave cities, snow-capped mountain ranges, a vibrant capital with a thriving food and wine scene, and some of the oldest vineyards on earth. Check live weather on our [city dashboard](/) before planning your Georgian adventure.
Georgia has been welcoming travellers for millennia, and its legendary hospitality, known locally as "tamada" culture, means visitors are treated as honoured guests. Whether you are drawn by the dramatic landscapes of the Greater Caucasus, the medieval monasteries perched on clifftops, or the natural wines poured freely in every village, Georgia delivers experiences that stay with you long after you return home.
Tbilisi: A Capital Like No Other
The Old Town and Its Architecture
Tbilisi's Old Town, known as Dzveli Tbilisi, is a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, wooden balconies draped with flowering vines, and centuries-old churches standing beside Persian-era bathhouses. The architecture is a fascinating blend of influences, reflecting the city's position on ancient Silk Road trade routes.
The Narikala Fortress, perched on a hill above the old town, offers panoramic views over the city and the Mtkvari River below. The walk up through the botanical garden is one of the most pleasant in the city, passing through terraced gardens and emerging at the fortress walls.
Food and Wine in Tbilisi
Georgian cuisine is one of the great undiscovered culinary traditions of the world. Khinkali, the famous soup dumplings filled with spiced meat and broth, are eaten by hand and washed down with local beer or wine. Khachapuri, the cheese-filled bread that comes in regional variations, is the ultimate comfort food and a staple of every Georgian table.
The wine culture in Tbilisi is equally impressive. Georgia is widely considered the birthplace of wine, with a winemaking tradition stretching back 8,000 years. The city's wine bars and restaurants serve both conventional wines and the distinctive amber wines made using the ancient qvevri method, where grapes ferment in clay vessels buried underground.

Kazbegi: Mountains and Monasteries
The Drive to Kazbegi
The Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi to Kazbegi is one of the most spectacular road journeys in the world. The route climbs through the Caucasus Mountains, passing the Zhinvali Reservoir, the medieval fortress town of Ananuri, and the Gudauri ski resort before reaching the Jvari Pass at over 2,300 metres.
The views from the pass, when weather permits, are extraordinary: a vast panorama of snow-capped peaks stretching in every direction, with the road winding down into the Terek River valley below.
Gergeti Trinity Church
The Gergeti Trinity Church, perched on a rocky promontory at 2,170 metres above sea level with the 5,047-metre Mount Kazbek as its backdrop, is one of the most photographed sights in the Caucasus. The 14th-century church is still an active place of worship and can be reached by a steep two-hour hike from the village of Stepantsminda.
The hike is well worth the effort. The trail passes through alpine meadows filled with wildflowers in summer, and the views from the church itself are among the finest in Georgia. On clear days, the summit of Mount Kazbek appears to float above the clouds.
The Kakheti Wine Region
Georgia's Winemaking Heartland
The Kakheti region, a two-hour drive east of Tbilisi, is the heart of Georgian winemaking. The Alazani Valley, flanked by the Greater Caucasus to the north and the Lesser Caucasus to the south, is carpeted with vineyards producing the grapes for Georgia's most celebrated wines.
The town of Sighnaghi, perched on a hilltop with views over the valley, is the most picturesque base for exploring the region. Its cobblestone streets, colourful houses, and surrounding medieval walls make it one of the most charming towns in the Caucasus.
Wine Tasting and Cellar Tours
Most wineries in Kakheti welcome visitors for tastings and cellar tours, often with little or no advance booking required. The experience is typically informal and generous, with hosts pouring multiple wines and accompanying them with local cheeses, cured meats, and fresh bread.
The qvevri winemaking process, where grapes are fermented with their skins in clay vessels for six months or more, produces the distinctive amber wines that have made Georgian wine famous among natural wine enthusiasts worldwide. These wines have a depth and complexity quite unlike anything produced by conventional methods.
