Caribbean Cruise: Your Complete Island-Hopping Guide

The Caribbean: Paradise Found

With 7,000+ islands spanning 1.06 million square miles, the Caribbean is the world’s most popular cruise destination for good reason. But not all Caribbean cruises are created equal.

Eastern vs. Western vs. Southern Caribbean

Eastern Caribbean

St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico. Best for: beach lovers and duty-free shopping. The most popular route with the biggest ships.

Western Caribbean

Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica. Best for: adventure activities (snorkeling, zip-lining, cenote diving). Cozumel’s reef is world-class for divers.

Southern Caribbean

Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire. Best for: experienced cruisers who want fewer crowds and more diverse cultures. These islands feel distinctly different from each other.

Best Ports of Call

  • St. Maarten/St. Martin: — Two countries on one island. Dutch side for nightlife, French side for gastronomy
  • Grand Cayman: — Seven Mile Beach is exactly as gorgeous as it sounds. Stingray City is unforgettable
  • Aruba: — The “Happy Island” has 365 days of sunshine and some of the calmest waters in the Caribbean
  • Barbados: — Rum distillery tours, flying fish sandwiches, and genuine warmth from locals
  • Cozumel: — The Mesoamerican Reef is the second-largest in the world
  • Insider Tips

  • Hurricane season: runs June–November. Ships reroute but it’s still riskier. Best time: December–April.
  • Private island days: are often the highlights. Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay and MSC’s Ocean Cay are exceptional.
  • Budget hack:: Repositioning cruises in April/May offer incredible value as ships move between seasonal markets.
