Scandinavian Fjords Cruise: Norway's Most Dramatic Waterways

The Fjords: Nature’s Masterpiece

Norway’s fjords are what happens when glaciers spend millions of years sculpting the landscape. The result is narrow waterways flanked by sheer cliffs up to 1,000 meters high, cascading waterfalls, and some of the most dramatic scenery on the planet.

Top Fjord Experiences

Geirangerfjord

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the poster child of Norwegian fjords. The Seven Sisters waterfall (seven separate streams cascading 250 meters) is the highlight. The best view is from the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint.

Sognefjord

Norway’s longest and deepest fjord stretches 205 km inland and plunges 1,308 meters deep. The village of Flåm at its inner end is the starting point for the legendary Flåm Railway.

Hardangerfjord

Known as the “Queen of Fjords,” this is Norway’s fruit garden. In May, apple and cherry orchards bloom along the fjord’s banks, creating a stunning contrast with the snow-capped mountains above.

Port Cities

Bergen

Norway’s second city and the gateway to the fjords. The UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf is photogenic from every angle. Take the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for panoramic views.

Tromsø

The “Gateway to the Arctic.” In summer, enjoy the Midnight Sun. In winter, the Northern Lights are spectacular. The Arctic Cathedral is an architectural icon.

Ålesund

Destroyed by fire in 1904 and rebuilt entirely in Art Nouveau style. The result is one of the most architecturally cohesive and beautiful small towns in Europe.

Practical Tips

  • Dress warm: even in summer — fjord breezes are chilly
  • Book a balcony cabin: — the scenery demands it
  • Hurtigruten: offers the most authentic Norwegian coastal voyage
  • Excursions are expensive: — Norway is pricey but worth every krone
  • When to Cruise

June–August for the best weather and midnight sun. May and September for lower prices and autumn colors.
