The Best Time to Visit Every Continent: A Season-by-Season Guide
When should you visit Africa? South America? Antarctica? This month-by-month guide ensures you always travel at the perfect time.

Timing Is Everything
The difference between visiting a destination at the right time versus the wrong time can be the difference between a trip of a lifetime and a disappointing experience. This guide covers optimal timing for every continent.
Europe
Peak: June–August
Long days, warm weather, everything open. But also: crowds, high prices, and 35°C in southern Europe.
Sweet Spot: May & September
Warm enough for everything, 30–50% fewer tourists, better prices. September in the Mediterranean is arguably the best travel month on Earth.
Winter Charm: December–February
Christmas markets (November–December), skiing in the Alps, and atmospheric cities like Prague and Budapest. Southern Spain and Portugal are mild even in January.
Asia
Southeast Asia: November–March
Dry season across most of the region. Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia are at their best.
Japan: March–May (Cherry Blossoms) & October–November (Autumn Foliage)
Two dramatically beautiful seasons. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cold but festive.
India: October–March
Cool, dry season. Rajasthan, Goa, and Kerala are perfect. Avoid April–June (scorching) and July–September (monsoon, though Kerala is magical).
Africa
East Africa Safari: June–October
Dry season means animals congregate around water sources, making wildlife viewing exceptional. The Great Migration in Kenya/Tanzania peaks July–September.
Southern Africa: May–September
Winter dry season is ideal for safaris. Cape Town is rainy but green; visit December–February for summer.
North Africa: March–May & September–November
Avoid summer heat in Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia.
North America
USA National Parks: September–October
Crowds thin, colors peak, temperatures moderate.
Canada: June–September
Short but glorious summers. September for Quebec’s autumn colors.
Caribbean: December–April
Dry season and escape from northern winter.
South America
Patagonia: November–March
Southern Hemisphere summer. Long daylight hours for hiking.
Amazon: June–November
Lower water levels make hiking easier and wildlife viewing better.
Peru (Machu Picchu): May–September
Dry season in the Andes. June–July is driest but coldest at night.
Oceania
Australia: March–May (Autumn) & September–November (Spring)
Avoid the extremes of summer and winter. Great Barrier Reef is best June–October.
New Zealand: December–February
Summer hiking season. March for fewer crowds.
Antarctica
November–March Only
The only time expedition cruises operate. November for pristine snow and penguins nesting. February for whale watching and warmer temperatures (“warmer” meaning −2°C).
