Cherry Blossom Season in Japan: The Complete Planning Guide

Sakura: Japan’s Most Beautiful Tradition

Every spring, Japan transforms into a pink and white wonderland as approximately 600 million cherry trees bloom simultaneously across the country. The tradition of hanami (flower viewing) dates back over 1,000 years, and modern Japan takes it just as seriously.

When to Go

Cherry blossoms follow a “cherry blossom front” (sakura zensen) that moves from south to north:

  • Okinawa:: Late January–February
  • Kyushu (Fukuoka):: Late March
  • Osaka/Kyoto:: Late March–Early April
  • Tokyo:: Late March–Early April
  • Tohoku (Sendai):: Mid April
  • Hokkaido (Sapporo):: Early–Mid May
  • Peak bloom lasts only 7–10 days. The Japan Meteorological Corporation releases forecasts starting in January.

    Tokyo

  • Ueno Park:: The most famous and festive spot. Locals claim spots hours before hanami picnics.
  • Chidorigafuchi Moat:: Rent a rowboat and paddle under a canopy of cherry blossoms beside the Imperial Palace.
  • Meguro River:: 800 trees line both banks, creating a pink tunnel. Best at night with illumination.
  • Kyoto

  • Philosopher’s Path:: A canal-side walking path lined with hundreds of cherry trees.
  • Maruyama Park:: Kyoto’s most popular hanami spot, centered around a magnificent weeping cherry.
  • Kiyomizu-dera:: The temple’s wooden terrace surrounded by blooming cherry trees is iconic.
  • Off the Beaten Path

  • Yoshino Mountain (Nara):: 30,000 trees covering an entire mountain. Japan’s most spectacular cherry blossom site.
  • Hirosaki Castle (Aomori):: 2,600 trees reflected in the moat. Often cited as the most beautiful cherry blossom spot in Japan.
  • Takato Castle Ruins (Nagano):: 1,500 unique pink-tinted kohigan cherry trees.
  • Hanami Etiquette

  • Arrive early: to claim a good spot (some people send a team member at dawn)
  • Bring a tarp: to sit on
  • Pack your own food and drinks: (convenience stores sell excellent bento boxes)
  • Clean up completely: when you leave
  • Don’t shake the trees: or break branches
  • Enjoy responsibly: — sake is traditional but public drunkenness is frowned upon
  • Night Viewing (Yozakura)

    Many parks illuminate their trees after dark, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Meguro River in Tokyo and Maruyama Park in Kyoto are spectacular after sunset.
